I will be looking at how US audiences have consumed music from Latin American artists during the late twentieth and early twenty first century. US audiences had largely focused on American, British, and Canadian artists throughout the twentieth century, but the expansion of Latino communities into the US, and the development of new musical genres, has led to an increase in popularity for Latin American musicians. While most analysis of Latin American music’s success in the US focuses on the mid-twentieth century, very little historical research has been done on the late-twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Alongside the growth of popularity of Latin American music, interest in studying such music has increased. Further research into reggaetón, Latin artists, and Latino communities in the US help to explain the influence of Latin America on the US music industry. I will be analyzing existing research, music by Latino artists, and chart data to detail the influence of Latin American music in the US around the turn of the twenty-first century. The United States has historically perpetuated a power imbalance between the US and Latin America, exuding significant influence over Latin America; however, music creation and consumption has the opportunity to provide evidence of Latin Americans as significant players, even within the United States. Further, music allows for an analysis of how Latin American music styles have influenced culture and music production in the US.
