Billboard’s year-end recap of top songs, artists, and albums of the year details the top 100 “hot” singles and tracks released throughout 2000. On the list of the year’s hot tracks, Latin artists Marc Anthony, Enrique Iglesias, and Jennifer Lopez all have published tracks that occupy spots within the top 100. Songs by Marc Anthony occupy two spots on the chart: numbers 22 and 23. Enrique Iglesias occupies the number 37 spot with “Be With You”, and Jennifer Lopez occupies the number 99 spot with “Waiting For Tonight”.
More than in previous years, Latin tracks gained prominence on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart due to the increase in demand for Latin music. Further, the presence of these songs on the chart reflects the new willingness of music executives to release and promote Latin tracks as singles, as opposed to only publishing entire albums. “Waiting For Tonight”, however, is not typically seen as a distinctly Latin track but rather a pop track released by a Latin artist. This song’s release and popularity reflect the pressures that music executives place on Latin artists to produce music that assimilates with American styles. Further, the song’s placement on the chart reflects U.S. audiences’ willingness to mass-consume music by Latin artists.
